During her presidency, she launched the National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention (2014), investigating how detention affects children's health, well-being, and development. She is also a keen advocate for the disenfranchised, disempowered, and marginalised.
"Armidale has a reputation for being particularly accepting of people coming here to join our nation," Sanctuary member June Endacott said, "and I'm sure that a lot of what Gillian Triggs will have to say will resonate with the people of Armidale.
"She has held such a position in so many areas of law and human rights. We're just delighted to have her, and feel we're very special."
Armidale Sanctuary, founded in 2003, helps Ezidis and other refugees to settle into our community, providing social and practical assistance, and helping with English skills.
They also invite someone interested in refugees and human rights to talk to Armidale each year; orthopaedic surgeon and former Iraqi refugee Munjed Al Muderis lectured last year.
Gillian Triggs' lecture will be held at Arts 1 Lecture Theatre, UNE, at 6pm on Thursday, March 28. Professor Triggs will sign copies of her book Speaking Up from 5.30pm. Entry free; donations to Armidale Sanctuary welcome.
