A free service provided to the community, the demand for it has increased steadily as more people discover the services of a handful JPs sharing an increasing workload. Only members of the NSW Justices Association may work as a JP in Armidale Courthouse, with application forms to join the association at the courthouse.
While most court houses have a JP service of some description, a new online system for managing appointments and reappointments of JPs is under development by NSW Department of Justice.
It will allow all NSW JPs to manage their appointment as a JP completely online, and in preparation for its launch the department will not be accept applications for new JPs or reappointments between 5pm January 11 and 5pm April 1.
JPs whose appointments expire between January 11 and May, and who wish to continue as a JP during this time must lodge an application form before January 11 either online here. or by mail by returning a form to Appointment Services, GPO Box 6, Sydney NSW 2001, or email to jp@justice.nsw.gov.au in order for their applications to be processed. Copies of reappointment forms can be found here.
Those JPs unsure of their expiry date, or who do not have an email address, please contact the Department of Justice on (02) 8688 7487, or by email at jp@justice.nsw.gov.au for assistance to get your reappointment applications completed before the system shut down deadline.
JPs whose terms expire after April 1 and do not apply for reappointment before January 11 will have to apply for reappointment online, using the new system and complete an online competency test as part of the reappointment process.
While applications usually take about three months to finalise, in some cases they may take up to six months, depending on their complexity, but applicants will be sent an email should there be any issue with their applications.
Any JPs interested in volunteering some of their time at Armidale Courthouse can contact Jenny Post on 0417 920 726 or Peter Hutchinson on 0407 658 358
