New England Art Society will run the 2018 Daphne Young Watercolour Art Prize at the Armidale Art Gallery from October 6 - 30.

The annual art prize and exhibition is one of only a few events solely for watercolour artists.
Daphne Young was an established artist during the 1990's and a staunch champion of the watercolour medium. She Exhibited widely in Brisbane and Sydney, and established a studio at Invergowrie before she died aged 56 in 1997.
Society president Tess Cullen said a bequest from Daphne's family began the first prize event.
"From then on the gallery kept it going from sponsorship and entries," Tess said.
It encourages traditional watercolour works.

"We've stuck with the more traditional use of watercolour, not necessarily the more traditional looking watercolour.
"You can do what you like with it, so long as you use the traditional technique which is the translucent technique."

Tess said she thought all the prize events encouraged proficient to emerging artists to put their work forward.
"There are very few watercolour prizes about," she said.
"I think they encourage people to have a go.
"The gallery is an organisation run by artists for artists, and we're not trying to be elite in any shape or form, and yet we still get very high quality artists entering these events."
This year's first prize is $700, second prize is $300, third prize is $100 and the People's Choice Award is $125 and entries close for the event on Saturday, September 29.
