The Armidale and Guyra libraries are celebrating Australian Reading Hour – and encouraging children and adults to enjoy a good book – by holding a Teddy Bears Sleepover on Monday, September 24.
Armidale Regional Council Mayor Simon Murray said each library would host a free story time and supper from 6pm to 7pm.
“To add some fun, we’re inviting people to bring their teddy bears. The bears can then stay for a sleepover and each participant can receive photographic evidence of their adventure,” he said.
Australian Reading Hour encourages people to take a break from what they are doing and pick up a book for an hour.
“It introduces or reconnects Australians with the joys of reading, putting them on the path to a habit with demonstrated benefits to well being,” Cr Murray said.
“In children it has been shown to help with identity formation, setting them up or success in the future. In adults, it has been shown to reduce stress by 68 per cent - more than listening to music, going for a walk or having a cup of tea.”
To register for the event, contact your local library by Friday, September 21. Armidale War Memorial Library can be contacted on 6770 3636, or phone 6770 7123 for Guyra L.T. Starr Memorial Library.
