A GAMES day at Tamworth Public School not only ended the term on an energetic note but also allowed the students to learn a few Indigenous words and stories.

An early NAIDOC Week celebration, the games were organised and run by Scott Hurn and his Year 4 class.
Mr Hurn, a Gomeroi man, said some of the games put an Indigenous spin on some old favourites.

Sack races were bandarr (kangaroo) races; and egg and spoon races became dhinawan (emu) races.
Children raced on low trolleys, which they called yurandaali (goanna) races.
They also played a traditional game from the Northern Territory, called koochee koolee, which involved throwing rocks (replaced by beanbags) into a target area.
“It was a good opportunity to teach a bit of language and culture,” Mr Hurn said.
The children also partook in a whole-school sausage sizzle.
It was the last in the school’s series of NAIDOC Week 2018 events, which started on the Monday with a whole-school assembly.
That featured performances by school singers, and guests who spoke on the theme “Because of her, we can”.
The school’s dance group also gave a performance of traditional dance.
