“It’s been really busy,” said new owner Kitty Li. “We’ve cooked more than a hundred meals in one night, not including lunch!”
The Fortune had been closed for some months after previous owners Jackie and Stephen Heung retired for health reasons.
More stories:
Ms Li and partner Gary Lightfoot bought the business, and refurbished the premises. They spent nearly three weeks painting, cleaning, and laying new carpet.
Ms Li had run the Dragon Court in Glen Innes since 2012. She sold the business last year, heard that the owner of the Fortune was sick, and bought the restaurant.
She still lives in Glen Innes, where her children are at school. When her oldest son finishes his last year at school, she might move to Guyra.
“I like being here,” she said. “Really friendly people, and I like cooking!”
She’s been cooking for twenty years, since she studied at a TAFE in Sydney and worked in a restaurant.
“I find that a lot of people like honey chicken, sweet and sour pork, because I cook a different way, and satay and Mongolian. They say the honey chicken is really crispy and tasty! Satay is really nice and creamy, lots of people like that, because it's got coconut milk.”
The Fortune Chinese Restaurant, 97 Bradley Street, Guyra, is open for lunch from 11.30am to 2pm, and for dinner from 5.30pm.
