The gardens, part of the Guyra Hub, opened in March 2015, and have proven a popular spot for local gatherings, including youth BBQ’s, playgroup outings, and Christmas parties – and, of course, growing delicious, healthy produce.
Around 40 people attended the colorful and convivial gathering, held from 5 to 8pm. “Many had never been to the Garden before,” Chris Hietbrink, who runs The Hub, said, “and everyone was impressed by our vast array of fruits and vegetables growing so well.”
Everyone brought food to share, and the Community Garden provided the BBQ foods, including sausages and steak. Jason Eddy, member of local blues band Crooked Tree, generously gave up his time to play background music.
“We are grateful to everyone who prepared food, and who helped set up and clean up this gentle and fun community event,” Mrs Hietbrink said.
“When everyone was gone, all that was left were a couple of bottles of water – and the fairies who guard the garden when the humans aren’t around.”
Mrs Hietbrink thanked Mark Fletcher, who volunteered weekly, for his tender care of the garden.
Anyone who wishes to become a Member of the Garden can drop into The Hub at Guyra for a membership form.
