She received a Contribution to Sport accolade at the Armidale Sports Awards late last year and at Guyra’s Australia Day awards last Thursday, Lockyer received the Contribution to Sports and Recreation honour.
“I wasn’t [expecting it] actually because we were going to put the under 10s in and we missed the boat,” she said.
“They were going to nominate me but another lady nominated me so that was nice.”
That lady who put Lockyer’s name forward was none other than Guyra’s Citizen of the Year Dot Vickery, who was recognised for her efforts within the community at the awards night.
Lockyer has been the president of the junior Super Spuds for a number of years.
She has six sons with five playing and last year, due to Guyra’s shortage of players in the older divisions, two played in Glen Innes ensuring her 2017 was busier than ever. More older players have expressed interest in lining up for the Super Spuds for this season and, off the back of a successful campaign last year, signs for the 2018 season look promising.
“The 14s look promising and we can soon start training,” she said.
“People can register and they can use that Active Kids voucher now and that’s what our fees are. We have just made it a neat $100 for every child so it’s basically free and everyone can get on there and register.”
The Active Kids rebate is a program developed by the NSW Government to encourage children to get involved in sport.
The program offers a $100 voucher per school-aged child for sports registration.
