Artists Brian Irving and Kay Smith are combining their styles at an exhibition in Guyra.
“It’s dedicated to the Guyra people, they’ve given us a lot of support over the years so we decided to do this,” Mr Irving said.
“I don’t think you’re ever going to see anything like it anywhere in Australia – I do the dots, she does the landscape and everyday painting.”
The pair met a few years ago when Mr Irving spotted Ms Smith’s work at the Guyra Show.
“I liked her work and wondered who this Kay Smith was,” Mr Irving said.
“When we went to pick up our paintings that’s where we met.”
The combination of Aboriginal art with other styles is not typical.
Ms Smith paints the scenery or animals and Mr Irving then adds his flair to it.
Sometimes it can take days for him to find the right inspiration for one of Ms Smith’s works.
Mr Irving said it’s what makes the exhibition so interesting.
“It’s combined artworks, she’s a white girl,” he said.
“But, that doesn’t matter.
“She’s an artist, I’m an artist and it’s no hassle at all.”
In 2014 the pair had an exhibition together at the Aboriginal Culture and Keeping Place in Armidale.
At that stage, they hadn’t yet combined their styles on canvas.
But, it was important to Mr Irving that the curation of their work be mixed.
“We didn’t have my work on one wall and hers on the other, it was all combined which is what I wanted,” he said.
The exhibition was supposed to be in December last year but Mr Irving had a setback with his health.
“I got crook, I had to have a bypass,” he said.
“I feel better now and at that point in time I didn’t want to do anything.
“But everything worked out, we’re going to get this thing done and have a good night.” The exhibition opens at the GALA centre on Friday January 19 at 6:30pm.
