Walcha president Peter Berry said the ankle had to be “reset” before the Westpac rescue chopper could airlift Green to hospital.
“The left ankle was very badly dislocated,” he said, adding that the ankle may also be broken. “It was basically turned around in a very awkward direction … They flew him to Tamworth to operate and do repairs tonight [last night].”
He added: “It was basically a try-saving tackle [by Green]. The Bundarra player was perfect. He pulled up straight away and called for help. He knew it was no good.”
Berry said several Walcha players had broken bones playing this season.
Saturday’s incident occurred just before half-time with Bundarra leading 16-0.
Walcha have a bye in the final round of the season next Saturday, and decided to end their year earlier by not playing on against Bundarra.
“We had to wait for the ambulance, and I think it’s about six broken bones this year. So we decided it’s enough for one year,” Berry said.
