Pupils from Guyra Central School and Bald Blair Public School honoured the day with a special assembly to recognise the occasion.
“This is particularly relevant to last week’s big science discovery,” Acting principal Gillian Davis said in her address.
A history-changing archaeological discovery in Kakadu found Aboriginal people have lived in Australia for a minimum of 65,000 years – 18,000 years longer than had been previously proved and at least 5000 years longer than had been speculated by the most optimistic researchers.
“It is vital we continue to preserve the language and to respect those stories and traditions because they have an extremely long history,” Mrs Davis said.
“Please ponder that thought as we enjoy our NAIDOC Week activities.”
Activities included a sausage sizzle, jewelry making, games, baking damper and an arrangement of art projects on display.
