One house was destroyed in Tenterden, near Guyra, while another tornado caused damage near Ben Lomond.
Melissa Ball was at the scene after the house was destroyed and said it was extremely lucky the elderly resident wasn’t harmed in the storm.
“Her house was gone. It was amazing, she was so lucky she wasn’t hurt,” Ms Ball said.
The woman told Ms Ball she had been in her bedroom with a pillow over her head when the storm hit. Ms Ball found her in the yard after the tornado had passed.
Ms Ball had been driving along when the tornado touched down near the Tenterden Station.
She said it was 500 metres ahead of her and caused a lot of damage.
“It was really scary,” Ms Ball said. “We were following it along when we had to turn around and flee for our lives.”
Armidale local Tony Bennett was motor biking with his friend Stewart Lowden just on the edge of the storm.
He described hail along Booralong Rd as a snowscape.
“There were shredded leaves all over the road and when we came to the creek there was 1.2 metres of water over the road,” Mr Bennett said.
Armidale, Inverell, Tenterfield, Lismore and Grafton were hit by wild weather, in including
destructive wind, large hailstones and heavy rainfall.
