Up against the-best-of-the-best, the pair won Most Successful Merino Fleece Exhibitor after smashing the competition and taking out six champion ribbons and plenty of first, second and third in the section.
“We’ve probably been doing it for four years at Sydney Royal,” Mrs Hills told The Argus.
“But we’ve been improving every year and improving our product on our property.”
Mr and Mrs Hills run about 4000 sheep on their 1,500 acre property near Guyra, called Leawarra.
“We’ve been here for about 25 years … we went into wool after I bought the property off my father in 1979,” Mr Hills said.
“We’ve worked fairly hard on the quality of our sheep and we’ve found fleeces we thought were good enough [to exhibit].”
The couple have won many awards and champion ribbons over the years and have come close to the big prizes.
“We got beat by half-a-point for the grand champion fleece last year,” Mr Hills said.
This year Mrs Hills was also selected to help judge the District Exhibits Competition.
The section involves showcasing produce from five regions across NSW and Queensland.
“With the District Exhibit I had the privilege of judging the sauces, relishes and chutney this year,” she said.
“It’s nice to see new recipes created, and what we are eating these days is changing and I think that’s very interesting to see.
“And I think that we can always improve by seeing what other people are doing.”
Mrs Hills flew to Sydney yesterday morning to collect their trophies, which were presented at a ceremony around 2pm.
“I’m looking forward to seeing exactly how many medallions we’ve won,” Mr Hills said.
