Reaching five metres in height, the Guyra Christmas tree is part of Council’s large program of free, community activities to join residents together in celebrating the 2016 holiday season.
The event will be held at the Recreation Grounds on Friday December 2 from 6:30pm, with Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall turning on the lights.
Armidale Regional Council Administrator Ian Tiley said that the whole community was invited to be a part of the fun, family evening at the Recreation Grounds.
“Everyone can enjoy a free sausage sizzle thanks to the support of Guyra Lions Club, while the lights decorating Guyra’s new Christmas tree are turned on for the first time,” he said.
“The traditional tree will be colourfully decorated and provide a great focus for the community’s Christmas festivities.”
The event will continue into the evening with a free outdoor screening of the family Christmas movie, Flight before Christmas.
“This is a chance to let the working week go and begin looking towards the holiday season,” Mr Tiley said.
“Bring a picnic blanket or some camp chairs and settle back to enjoy a Christmas movie under the stars.”
The Armidale Christmas tree will also be unveiled on Thursday in the mall.
The tree has been designed by Chas Clarkson, the same body who has produced some of Australia’s best Christmas tree constructions, including the one which resides in the Sydney city centre of Martin Place.
Mr Tiley said the purchase of the new tree was assisted by a donation from the former Armidale Christmas Lights Committee.
“The committee was originally established by Gordon Brennan, a well-known Armidale businessman who was a great believer in supporting local businesses and fostering an active and vibrant CBD,” he said.
“This donation is a gift to the whole community that will contribute to mall festivities for many years to come.”
The month of events offers something for everyone.
