On Saturday in Inverell, Terry Vidler’s Shadow Boss won the final race of the day while the Paul Grills-trained Kingston Time held on to win the feature race of the day, the Digger’s Cup.
Both horses were ridden by Jodi Worley.
Grills said Kingston Time didn’t need much preparation after coming third out of nine in a 2650m race at Ballina 12 days earlier.
Grills noted that Jodi Worley had ridden Kingston Time in several wins, having ridden most of the races involving the chestnut gelding in the past two years.
Grills relished Saturday’s win, saying “there were plenty of Diggers there to see it, the day after Remembrance Day. It all fitted in well with the Inverell club,” he said.
Grills remarked that Kingston Time had often been in races from 2000m to 2300m, but that “he had won 1600m before, so we knew he could do it if we’d run everything right”.
Grills said Kingston Time “had to conserve as much energy as possible” for a while as other horses “ran pretty hard”, before Kingston Time and Cash To Splash moved to the middle and battled it out for first place.
Looking ahead, Grills said he would try to find a race for Kingston Time in the next couple of weeks, prior to race meets at Coffs Harbour and Armidale.
