The guest speaker, Ron Vickress is a poet, author and playwright.
Mr Vickress was very interesting and gave a great speech all about his experience of becoming a writer.
Mr Vickress has written quite a few children’s books with very good illustrations and he has also written books about various experiences he has had in his life.
Mr Vickress is actually an ex-naval man as well, so his talk involved a bit about those experiences and the mixed-times of his life.
During World War II, he served in the Australian navy as a signalman on the corvette HMAS Pirie.
Mr Vickress has since taken up teaching positions across the state including lecturing in English and Drama at the Armidale College of Advanced Education.
A great day was had by all who attended the meeting.
On Monday this week, we had the September meeting which saw 16 members in attendance.
It was a very good morning for all in attendance and we had the pleasure of meeting the guest speaker, Hunter Davidson who is currently a student at the Guyra high school.
Mr Davidson was chosen as one, with a number of other students from schools across the state, to take-part in a trip to France in July this year.
Mr Davidson said had a great experience and found out a lot of very good information regarding the First World War.
Mr Davidson saw many parts that have been restored in recent times, as well as other parts where the grass had covered the land.
He even got to see where all the bunkers were built for the soldiers and where many bombs had landed.
Mr Davidson also got to visit many of the cemeteries and memorials that now occupy different parts of the old war-zones.
While he had an amazing time, the experience was certainly a bit hair-raising in places, according to Mr Davidson.
In other news, there will be nine members from the Guyra Probus Club that will be attending the New England Probus Club meeting coming up on September 19.
The meeting will be held at the Armidale Bowling Club and will be part of the inter-club visit.
