The week-long event began on 18 April with Albury turning on perfect weather all week long.
Gus White was first to play and beat Victoria in their first game by a very close margin of only one point. The second game they played Queensland and came out convincing winners, 15-8.
This put them into the Thursday night final. They rode out, under lights, against Victoria and this time beat them easily 14-6.
Gus played very well in this final game and for his efforts come home with the award of Best No 1. Congratulations to Gus!
Our junior boys did not start play until the Wednesday and played the early game against Victoria and won easily, 31-10.
Thursday was a nail bitter against a hot Queensland team. The boys played good polocrosse and beat the Reds 20-13.
Western Australia was the next team to beat and once again the skills of the NSW boys easily overcame the WA boys 21-9.
This of course meant the NSW boys were undefeated and red hot favourites going into the final against Queensland on Saturday. The boys knew from experience that Queensland would not go down without a fight and that is what we got.
With the NSW boys always in front the Reds got within a couple of points a few times and then two free goals against us meant things were getting tight.
Our blue boys, however, showed great composure and skill to come out the final winners 27-21.
To top it off, Tim Finlayson received Best No 1 and at the final presentations on Sunday Alec Grills was named in the u16 mixed team to go to South Africa in July. An amazing effort.
All of our boys played great polocrosse: their skill, composure and sportsmanship was commendable. The junior coach said as much in his presentation speech on Saturday and said they were one of the best teams he had coached in 16 years of coaching.
Well done to the boys. I am sure I can speak on behalf of the club and say how proud we are of you all, congratulations!
All in all, NSW won 7 of the 9 finals, with one team coming in runners up and one team not making it to the finals.
The Albury club did an amazing job running the event and the facilities were great.
These things do not succeed without sponsors and I would like to mention the local sponsors. BBQs Galore from Armidale was the major sponsor of the Junior team, a big thanks to John and Pip. They also sponsored a cap for the boys.
Virbac sponsored leather belts for the junior boys and Landmark Livestock sponsored a rug. They looked great decked out in all the gear so thankyou to these people and companies.
I would also like to make mention of an ex member of our club and son of Roger and Louise Grills, Abbott. Abbott also had a very successful end to his Nationals campaign taking out numerous awards.
He was in the winning senior men’s team. He won Best No 1, Best horse in the men’s division, Champion horse and rider in the men’s division and champion men’s horse (Berragoon Percussion). He is truly talented, congratulations to Abbott.
On the local front, Inverell had their carnival last weekend (no results to hand).
Quirindi this weekend and our local carnival will be held on the 21st and 22nd of this month so please come along and see what it all about.
I also would like to apologise to Sam Finlayson for not mentioning him in the u21 team that played at the recent Barastoc comp in Warwick.
