Flowers now mark the spot on the New England highway near the Sandon St intersection, where he was struck by a B-double truck at around 12.30am.
It is believed he had been walking along the highway from south Guyra when the accident happened. He was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics but died at the scene.
Lenny is survived by his partner Megan Macey, four-year-old son Leo, mother Maureen, brother Rodney and sister Robyn.
Perhaps best known for his prowess in the boxing ring, Lenny is being remembered as a good family man, a reliable worker, a good sportsman, a true gentleman and a bit of a larrikin.
Younger brother Rodney said the family was devastated by what happened.
“It’s not something you are prepared for,” he said. “He was well supported by the community during his boxing heyday.”
“There would always be a crowd, if there was a boxing match on in town five or six hundred people would turn up to watch,” he said.
Guyra Team Rowe Boxing owner Cliff Rowe said he was saddened to hear of Lenny’s death. He had coached Lenny from the age of 10 and said he had shown extraordinary promise as a boxer.
“Lenny was just a tough man scared of nothing and fearless, but he always had respect,” Cliff said. “He was in 110 fights and had 105 wins.”
A funeral service is expected to take place on Monday October 26, at 2pm (to be confirmed).
Oxley Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the incident and any witnesses are urged to contact police. The 58-year-old driver of the B-double from Queensland was taken to
Armidale Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.
Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are urged to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
A report is being prepared for the information of the Coroner.
