He has been appointed first grade coach for 2015 and hopes he can help revive the club and make it a force in Group 19 Rugby League again.
After two years on the sidelines, the Spuds are on their way back but need players to attend training and register their interest as soon as possible to ensure that senior league is not absent from town for another year.
“The group is pushing us to have three grades,” Stephen said.
“So we’re stressing we need everyone interested in playing to sign up so we can have three teams, otherwise they might not let us in.
“Guyra is a rugby league town and we’re trying hard to get it going again.”
Stephen was a regular in the Guyra first grade side from 1991 to 2003 and played in the premiership winning sides of 2002 and 2003.
He wants to bring the Spud spirit of old back to the club.
“I’m going to get some of the old players from when I played to come into the sheds and talk to the players about what it means to play for Guyra,” he said.
The club appointed its coaches at a meeting on Sunday.
Peter Presnell will add reserve grade coach to his club president’s role, while Tony Dittman and Tom Starr will combine to coach the women’s league tag side.
Now they are asking players from all grades to sign up and get training.
Training continues at the soccer grounds every Tuesday from 6pm and from next week (Feb 5) there will also be training on Thursdays at the same time.
The first outing will be at the Armidale Nines tournament on February 28 and the club is also seeking a trial game to be held in Guyra in March.
The premiership starts the weekend after Easter in April.
