Now in their third year the Kennedy awards are for news professionals NSW which is Australia’s most competitive media market.
Greg began his career with the Armidale Express and, after many years working as a feature writer with the Sydney Morning Herald, currently writes for The Australian newspaper.
His win was in recognition of his feature story on a little known Central Coast track rider Michael “Mick” Maloney, 43, who was killed when hit by a train in April 2014.
A virtually homeless battler Mr Maloney was struck while taking a short-cut crossing the railway tracks at Wyong - a tragedy witnessed by Mick’s two young sons. Greg’s story, the judges noted, depicted a life far removed from the glamour often associated with the “Sport of Kings.”
Greg’s writing has twice been recognised with Australia’s highest journalistic honour The Walkley Award, which he received in 2001 and 2003. The screenplay for the film Suburban Mayhem was based on his 2003 Walkley Award winning feature “Death Surrounds Her”.
Greg is also the author of two books, Adventures in Caravanastan written with his partner Lisa Upton and Exit Wounds published in 2012, written with Major General John Cantwell.
