Briana Merritt will be spending next year in Switzerland as a Youth Exchange Student. This program enables young people aged 16-18 to spend a year living and studying in an overseas Rotary district, hosted by Rotary club members in that country. Briana will experience the culture of Switzerland, make many new friends and learn to speak French and German.
The Youth Exchange Program provides a unique opportunity for young Australians to experience at first hand the many cultures of a different country, a new way of life and in some instances another language. Often, the friendships they make will be life long and important in achieving the aims of the exchange: the building of goodwill and understanding between countries.
Austin Youman was one of 17 students out of 49 to be selected to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) in Canberra in January next year. The NYSF aims to inspire young students interested in science to lean to make informed decisions about courses and careers in the sciences and to gain a professional skill set to help them realise their potential.
The NYSF program’s partnerships with organisations such as the Australian National University, ANSTO, CSIRO, the Cochlear Foundation, and many others provide students with new insights into the worlds of tertiary study and research. They also provide information about the many employment opportunities and career pathways that are evolving in our rapidly changing society.
At the Guyra Rotary meeting held on Tuesday, August 12 Yvette Ballard, the science teacher at Guyra Central School, demonstrated her enthusiasm for science.
Wendy Mulligan, Rotary president said: “Yvette is to be commended for encouraging her students to participate in programs outside the school that will assist them in their future careers.”
Guyra Rotary is proud to sponsor the students from Guyra Central School as they are great ambassadors for our town and region.
Austin Youman is the third student from Guyra Central to be successful in being able to attend the NYSF, so it says a lot about the students and their hunger for learning and the passion of the teachers.
It is not an easy task to gain entry to NYSF and Guyra Rotary congratulates both Austin and Briana on their success.
