Individuals, community groups, businesses and organisations from across the New England have been asked to become involved by organising historically themed activities during this week. This week coincides with the centenary of the First World War and as such most events will focus on the New England Region during wartime.

Home and Community Care
Fees and Charges Review
Council’s HAAC Services have recently undertaken an extensive review of their fees. This included a survey of HAAC clients regarding the quality of services.
The review found that in order to maintain a cost effective and client focused approach to service delivery, our client fees need to increase to cover the cost of running the service. HAAC clients will shortly see a small increase in the fees for the provision of meals on wheels and morning teas.
Guyra Preschool and Long Day
Care Centre Operational Review
Since 2009 the Guyra Preschool and Long Day Care Centre has been operated by Guyra Shire Council.
During this time the Centre has complied with a number of legislative changes including changes to staff to child ratios. This has resulted in the Centre running at an operating deficit.
Management has continued to review the Centre’s operating structure in order to improve its financial viability. As a result, Council has increased fees by $3 per day across all revenue streams.
Laura Creek Crossing Upgrade
I recently had the pleasure of accompanying our local member, Adam Marshall MP, to the Laura Creek crossing on Longford Road where he announced the grant of $25,000 towards the repair of the crossing to provide better water flow and help restore the native fish population in the Gwydir River.
The grant will assist Council to replace the existing pipe culvert with a fish friendly box culvert.
New England Rail Trail Proposal
I am pleased to see such healthy debate over the proposal to establish a rail trail between Black Mountain and Ben Lomond. There are arguments for and against the proposal and community interest is heartening.
It is important to recognise that, apart from providing some administrative support in assisting the Rail Trail committee, Council is not providing funds for the project and should the rail trail come to fruition, it will not be a Council owned facility but will be a community owned and operated asset.
