He underwent months of chemotherapy, blood transfusions and medical procedures. He fought hard to finally return home in May 2019.
In his maintenance stage of treatment, he underwent monthly check-ups in Newcastle, but Sam enjoyed a family Christmas and started back at Guyra Preschool with things looking brighter.

Then, on January 22, test results indicated a relapse.
Sam, his parents Mitchell and Natalie and siblings George and Haidee returned to Newcastle so he could undergo further treatment.
Sam turned four there on February 11.
The family will also need to travel to Sydney in the coming months where Sam will undergo a bone marrow transplant that requires a minimum 100 days of isolation. Doctors requested the family remain together during this time, which meant Mitchell would be unable to return to work.
They were recently informed that Sam's brother and sister were not matches for a transplant.
The Guyra community has gathered behind the family to support it with a series of fundraisers, and one of the organisers is Amanda Campbell who is the Guyra Preschool director.
"But this event isn't specifically being run by the preschool though," she said.
"It more just like local people getting together. It's community-wide events. We've had A Can for Sam, which is donations of cans and bottles that we're putting in the Return and Earn scheme.
"We're also in the process of organising some donation tins that we'll place around the town for people to put their money in. That's going to be called Cents for Sam."
A Family Fun Day Fundraiser will be held from 4am to 7pm at the Guyra Bowling & Recreation Club on the March 21. It will coincide with the annual three-person Ambrose Golf day run by the Guyra United Soccer Club.
Further details will be published in the coming weeks.
