Even though he has been retired for about 11 years, Max Tavener has remained what many would call a fairly busy man. With a smile he said he still did something every day and it kept him entertained.

“Well, it keeps me out of the wife's way,” he quipped as he chuckled.
“I was surprised to get this [award]. When I received the notification and read through it I thought, ‘God, someone’s done their homework on me!’

“When I read some of the achievements, it brought back memories that I’d sort of forgotten about. It was a walk down memory lane for me.”
Max said as much as he appreciated the award, it was normally a team that achieved outcomes and very rarely individuals.
“I’m the president of the RSL, and I’ve got the Executive Committe and what have you, and everyone’s got a job and, you know, I just happen to head it up,” he said.
“As busy as I am I’m enjoying myself and you get a lot of satisfaction out of getting results for veterans and their families.”
Max’s achievements include:
- Armidale Sub-Branch of the Returned and Services League of Australia - A member since 1994. Honorary president, since 2016. Former secretary. Former treasurer. Current pension and welfare officer and Sub-Branch delegate to New England District Council and State Congress.
- Armidale Legacy, Legacy Australia - A member since 1987-1999. Co-ordinator All Seasons Day Club since 2009.Junior vice-president for two years. Senior vice-president 2012-2013. President 2014-2015.
- Training Ship (TS) Armidale, Australian Naval Cadets - Established the Unit in 1993. Commanding Officer and Lieutenant, 1993-2008.
- The Armidale School (TAS)- Quartermaster School Army Cadet Unit 1990s-2000s. Former Member Catering Staff. Member, New England Sub-Section, Naval Association of Australia, current.
- Lodge Unity No. 6, Armidale, Freemansons NSW/ACT - A member since 1993. Worshipful Master, 1998-1999, 2003 and 2015. District Grand Inspector of Workings, 2010-2012. Current catering officer.
Awards and recognition:
- Recipient of Citizen of the Year, Armidale Dumaresq Council, 2004.
