Although Stacey Weatherall lives in Armidale she has a great deal of sympathy for those people doing it hard out in Walgett. So, she decided to do something about it and has been busily collecting “Water for Walgett”.

Walgett has a water crisis. The town is on level six water restrictions and relying on emergency supplies of bore water. Power failure at the town’s processing plant in near 40 degree heat last week left the town without water for a day, which saw the reservoir level plunge and the town’s water pressure drop greatly.
“I’m rallying the community to come together and donate slabs of bottled water for Walgett,” Stacey said.
The other town's water runs had a fair bit, so hopefully we can match that.

“I just feel for the community out there because of the heat wave. We’ve had pretty hot weather here in Armidale, so we can only imagine what it’s like out there.
“The people of Armidale have been generous. I’ve had a few local small businesses donate a lot of water. This morning I picked up eight slabs of water off Jackson’s Quality Meats, so they were really generous.”
Stacey said she had donated herself and already had a “fair bit” of water, but was expecting more from a local rugby league team.
“We’ve got about 15 slabs of water and another 15 coming from the Armidale Community Services Group. I’ve also got Lisa Waters, the Aboriginal development officer at the Armidale Regional Council, who sent out an email to her contacts and we’ve got a lot of responses,” she said.

“I’m colaborating with the Aboriginal Medical Service out there, and I can either drop the water off with them and they will distribute it, or there’s a local guy out there who people have been using as a drop off. He’s giving it out to all the Elders out there.”
She said she intended use her own vehicle towing a caged trailer for the five hour drive to get the water out there, but was also expecting to have about 500 – 800 slabs, and just might need to use something bigger than a trailer.
