While launching this year’s Kmart Christmas Tree Appeal outside the store on Monday morning, Kmart manager Suzi Evans said the appeal was in its 31st year, and last year’s event was one of the largest the Armidale store had ever experienced.

“Kmart is very proud to have the association with the Salvation Army to be able to provide gifts to families who are in need over the Christmas period,” she said.
“So, the generosity of the community, the SES and the other supporters that we have, who will donate cash or gifts over the appeal period to buy much needed items for these families to give their families the Christmas that they so very much want to.

“The business as a whole is hoping to raise over 500,000 gifts this year for people in need. Our aim is to better last year, so we’d like to see just a few more than 1000 put under the tree for this year.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall dared the community to go one step better than last year’s fantastic response.
“One thousand gifts donated and left under the tree is enormous for a town this size,” he said.
“I’d like to challenge the community to do even better this year, because we do have a lot of people in need, a lot of people on the land doing it tough.
“This is about the true spirit of Christmas, which is the spirit of giving and ensuring that everyone gets to enjoy a wonderful Christmas Day, regardless of who they are and where they’re from.”
