This year’s commemorative address was given by Major Grant Prendergast who said World War I was supposed to be the war to end all wars, but when World War II came, it came right onto Australia’s doorstep.
“Following World War II we we called upon to participate in other international operations, such as Malaya, Korea, Borneo, Vietnam and today we currently have soldiers deployed fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said.
“More recently, the Australian Defence Force has also worked to bring peace disaster relief, humanitarian assistance and security to many urban areas around the world.

“As previously mentioned, I have just returned home from fighting in Iraq with our coalition partners. Australia is a country at war. Our commitment continues today with our presence in the Middle East. So we must not forget that; we must not forget the men and women who are currently deployed.”
He said it was also our duty to remember and never forget those soldiers lost in modern areas of conflict.
The closing prayer was given by the Very Reverend Chris Brennan, who also delivered the Prayer of Remembrance at the beginning of the service and the Prayer For Hope in the middle.
