While horses thundered down the rain-drenched track at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse, Guyra citizens, nearly 1300 km to the north, enjoyed a fashion parade and lunch at the Guyra Bowling Club.

The event was Can Assist’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

“Everyone likes to get involved with the spirit of Melbourne Cup, so it’s combining fund-raising with a day out for everyone,” Can Assist president Wendy Jackson said, who organised the event with treasurer Lyn Skinner.

Nearly 100 people attended the two-course luncheon, with a fashion parade put on by women’s clothing store Noni B, who comes up from Armidale. Local members of Can Assist model the clothes.

Rita Williams won the prize for best-dressed. She wore a dress she’d bought years ago for her son’s wedding in Melbourne, and found a hat to match it in Stanthorpe last weekend.

“It’s a lovely day to get out with the ladies and gentlemen,” Rita said. “It gets everyone together; it’s a tradition.”

May Fenton won the prize for the best hat.

“The way the locals support our branch of Can Assist is to be applauded,” Wendy said, “and the Bowling Club have been terrific with their sponsorship, and giving us the facilities to put on the day.
