Recognising the impact that young women make is one goal of the Zonta Club of Armidale, which is seeking now entrants for two annual awards with a combined value of $1500.

Applications are now open from 16 to 19-year-old females with superior leadership skills and a commitment to public service and civic causes, and from Year 12 females intend to study in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) discipline at university.

Zonta members believe that young women are the key to women’s advancement in the field of public service, and so offer the $500 Young Woman in Public Affairs Award (YWPA).
YWPA convener Ruth Cason said young women were involved in so many interesting pursuits that benefit our communities and economy.

"We are trying to encourage young women who are public affairs minded, and recognising young women who have become involved in and around their community," Ruth said.
"They may be showing really good leadership skills at their schools and we're acknowledging all that.
Ruth said the $1000 STEM award was to promote, encourage, assist and reward the participation of young women in tertiary courses which lead to careers in areas where women are under-represented.
