A would-be shoplifter got more than he bargained for when he lifted three coats off a rack outside a Grey Street store and started to walk away with them.

He hadn’t reckoned on Carol Sparks watching him from her car parked in the middle part of the street. As the man walked away, without paying, she got out and raised the alarm.
She ran into Carelle’s and shouted to the owner, Sue Waters, that someone was stealing from outside her shop.
They both set off in hot pursuit.
The man headed down the lane beside the Town Hall and they followed. Sue Waters said she was shouting “Drop the clothes, you thieving bastard”.
Eventually, he jettisoned his ill-gotten gains and hot-footed it away.
The ladies said the main thing was that he hadn’t succeeded in his theft.
Both accept that they are not the fittest or the fastest on the planet.
Carol Sparks who is the town’s Deputy Mayor said: “We were determined to get him and we would do it again”.
Sue Waters said: “If anyone decides they want to shoplift from the shops in Grey Street, they’d better watch out because all of us shopkeepers have had enough and we’re all banding together to try and prevent this from happening again”.
