On Saturday, thanks to his sponsors and the guidance of his coach Gareth Williams, MacDonald will travel to the Philippines to partake in a grueling 10-day training camp which will include sparring with local pros like Jerwin Ancajas, who has held the IBF junior bantamweight title since September.
One of the aims of the training camp for James is to push him to become a more experienced fighter, the heat and humidity in the Philippines is the ideal environment to test MacDonald and get him ready for his next fight April 7 at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and making him a top contender to take on an Australian title.
There are many benefits to training in hot conditions including improved blood flow, metabolic rate, the cardiovascular system, and fluid balance, another reason the conditions in the Philippines are ideal.
The training camp in the Philippines will be intense and leave little time for distractions which MacDonald believes will only benefit his career.
Training away from home gives a level of seclusion and the ability to focus completely on boxing.
Taking MacDonald out of the comfort zone of training at his home gym “the boxing shop” in Brisbane will not only enhance his physical skills but condition his mind as well, making him hungrier, an essential component to any successful fighter.
Professional boxing is all about conditioning the mind as well as the body, and testing it every condition. The decision to head overseas was a no brainer for the Guyra boxer and his team.
While the decision was easy the trip required funding.
After MacDonald’s last fight on February 24, which saw him defeat veteran boxer Steven Marks from Victoria, one of his major sponsors Stacey Robinson from Image Select gifted him a hard earned bonus that would fund the training camp trip.
His other sponsors David from TGS Financial Planning, Brad at Charter Conveyancing and Andrew at AWC Andrew Wilkins Consulting, have all been instrumental in his journey to success.
