“We're pretty excited and we're very proud that we've made 20 years in business, so it's a pretty big achievement,” said Tania Lennon, who runs the store at 61 Ollera Street with her husband Darren.
To mark the occasion, the Lennons will hold a birthday sale on Friday and Saturday, with a 25 per cent discount on paint, garden, and power tools.
The store offers everything the Guyra community could want in terms of building supplies and hardware: lawnmowers, flower and vegetable seeds, BBQs, camping equipment, floodlights, firestarters, mosquito zappers, drills, bathroom and plumbing appliances, door furniture, screws, nuts, and bolts, reflective dog coats, and, for the kids, plastic dinosaurs.
The Lennons purchased the long-standing family business from Les and Carmel Kirk, for whom Darren worked. “They supported us through the first years of transition, but have continued to be a strong support for us,” Mrs Lennon said.
Mrs Lennon attributed their success to working hard and being “lucky to live in a small community that supports us”.
The Lennons are active members of their community, and have been strong supporters of the Guyra United Soccer Club, who presented them with a special recognition award in 2016.
“We sponsor all of our school, sporting, and charity events every year,” Mrs Lennon said. “In small communities, no-one really exists alone, because that's part of helping each other.”
The store is a family-run business, with a staff of six: the Lennons, and four casuals.
“We've got really, really good staff,” Mrs Lennon said, “and we've got some really great customers, so it pretty much makes work easy to come to, because we enjoy being here.”
Most of their children also work around the hardware industry. One son is a builder/concreter, and has taken on his younger brother as an apprentice while another son is a welder.
After twenty years, the Lennons plan to continue supporting Guyra.
“We hope to be here for another five years to continue to serve and help our community,” Mrs Lennon said. "We’ve still got some boxes that we haven’t ticked yet, things we’d like to do.”
“The biggest thing that we want to say is: Thank you to our Guyra community for their support, because obviously without community support, we wouldn't be as successful as we are, and thank you to the people who have helped us along the way.”
