He will take the managing director position at Hunter H20, formerly Hunter Water, in Newcastle.
“I think the key drivers are family reasons and it’s a great opportunity career-wise for me, moving into the private sector,” Mr Dennis said.
But, there’s still no word on who will take his seat at the head of the table.
The Express asked council service leaders Lindsay Woodland and Mark Piorkowski whether they were considering the position, both refused to comment.
I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time as CEO, it’s been an amazing experience with a great community and the staff have been fantastic.

Mr Dennis said council will ultimately have the vote on the new chief executive.
It’s still unclear who will take the helm in the interim, with Mr Dennis leaving on March 20.
“I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time as CEO, it’s been an amazing experience with a great community and the staff have been fantastic,” Mr Dennis said.
The achievements Mr Dennis is most proud of are leading council through the amalgamation, the Malpas pipeline and industrial land development.
Armidale Regional Council mayor Simon Murray announced the resignation on Tuesday.
“Since commencing my role as Mayor and during the administration period Peter has demonstrated outstanding leadership and initiated numerous programs that will deliver outstanding customer service for our community,” Cr Murray said.
“Peter has done a wonderful job for our community and will be sorely missed.
“On behalf of the Council we wish him all the success in his new role.”
Cr Murray said it’s business as usual for Armidale Regional Council.
“My priorities for the region have not changed,” he said. “Sustainable economic growth, job creation and value for money in the delivery of services to our community are a priority and will continue to be as we commence recruitment for a new CEO.”
