The initiative turns food scraps and leftovers into high grade compost at the Armidale Waste Management Facility.
Armidale Regional Council councillor Dorothy Robinson said the $208,400 in state government funding for the expansion would be fantastic for the environment.
“The more we divert from the landfill the better it is for the planet in general,” Cr Robinson said.
“Methane emissions from organics is a pretty big issue as far as the climate is concerned.
“It’s also much better for the environment if we actually make use of these resources.”
Food waste that goes into the green bin processes in aerobic conditions, it’s then turned into a compost without generating methane.
Kitchen scraps are needed to balance carbon and nitrogen.
The added benefit is that it reduces landfill odour and stops the attraction of vermin.
Armidale Community Garden coordinator Jo Leoni said the compost is an invaluable resource.
“This particular compost is a really high grade product,” Ms Leoni said.
“I don’t think there are many places that are doing as good a job as Armidale in terms of getting green waste out of landfill and using it then to produce a really valuable product.
“It’s a huge operation and it’s really, really beneficial to the community.”
