Legislation drafted with a goal of legalising same sex marriage by Christmas
No matter what the outcome a group of senators has moved swiftly to ensure legislation - authored by Liberal backbencher Dean Smith - will be debated as soon as Thursday, with the goal of legalising same-sex marriage by Christmas.
The Prime Minister, who returned from South East Asia last night will make a speech as soon as the result is announced.
A regional support group asked for sensitivity during the debate
Fay Heywood of Parents and Friends of Gays and Lesbians (PFLAG) North West told The Northern Daily Leader she hoped people on both sides would be “sensitive, inclusive and respectful of people who are different from us”.
Sports fans support codes supporting Same Sex Marriage
Rugby fans in Australia were the most likely to back their code coming out in support of same-sex marriage, while AFL tails off the list in a new survey on whether governing bodies were right to take a stance on the debate.The survey of 1003 people, conducted by YouGov and Monash University's Behavioural Science Lab, found 56 per cent of those quizzed believed it was right for sporting organisations to pledge their public support for SSM.
