Alecia Blair, Clea Townsend and Justine Eddy accompanied the students to the event.

Mrs Eddy said it was an amazing day and everyone had a wonderful time.

“The students got to see inspirational speakers Dean and Brad Widders, spent time with Dolly Jerome learning to weave a basket, painted boomerangs and had faces painted as well,” Mrs Eddy said.

“Students also got to have photos taken with Isaiah Firebrace – an Australian singer who won the eighth season of The X Factor Australia in 2016 and represented Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest.

“A very special thank you to Gwyneth Pearson for our yummy lunches and fruit.”

Mrs Eddy also thanked the bus driver and teachers including Mrs Nicholson.

“It was a great day and fantastic cultural and mentoring experience,” she said.

The Oorala Centre was founded in 1986 and offers facilities, programs and services of a nationally recognised standard to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who have chosen to study at UNE.

Oorala comes from a local Aboriginal word meaning “a camp” or “a place where people come together” and it was chosen by Indigenous students enrolled at UNE when the centre opened.
