Chainsaws have been used to tear through Apex Memorial Lookout on Monday night.
“Vandals used a chainsaw to cause serious damage to the picnic table on site and also cut down three trees,” an Armidale Regional Council spokesperson said.
A Council worker discovered the mess during a regular daily maintenance visit.
But police had not been notified when contacted by The Express on Wednesday afternoon.
Inspector Matthew Hemsworth said local police regularly liase with Council and would be in contact to find out more.
Council said such behaviour was disrespectful to ratepayers and to the community.
“Rate payers’ money should be directed at improving our parks rather than repairing damage,” the ARC spokesperson said.
“Council is considering options to address ongoing challenges like this.”
One option pitched by Council was to close the lookout by 6pm during winter. But residents say that wouldn’t help.
“Cameras wouldn’t be addressing the issue, neither would closing the lookout,” Luke Cutler-Chaffey said.
“Build some more parklands or a sporting complex.
“We need more business and jobs, maybe lower commercial rents, and get these kids into part time jobs.”
Kaylene Jay said cameras would help. “It can still be vandalised even if closed,” she said. “Cameras should have been put up years ago.”
