“Guyra would have no political power over its destiny in a combined entity,”
- James Jackson
The Guyra Branch met on December 3, and reiterated their deep displeasure at the continued push by the State Government to merge Guyra Shire Council with Armidale Dumaresq.
Secretary James Jackson said that the proposal for Armidale Council to have control over the setting of the community’s objectives is generally considered offensive.
“Guyra would have no political power over its destiny in a combined entity,” Mr Jackson said. “What is also concerning regarding this issue is the lack of imagination of our political leaders in finding an alternative way to capture economies of scale without destroying the ability of communities to control their own destiny.”
“It is sensible for councils to combine some services to create scale however for other functions, like planning decisions, it is critical that locals have significant influence over these decisions.”
“Unfortunately politician’s hearing and creativity improves with the number of complaints they get.
“The addresses of a couple of politicians that are a little deaf and bereft of vision on this issue are below. We encourage Guyra residents to give these gentlemen the benefit of our wisdom on these issues.”
