Lachlan won bronze in the welding division of the competition, aimed at recognising the talents of young people undertaking vocational education and training.
He qualified to attend after winning a gold medal at the 2012 WorldSkills Australia National Competitions in Sydney last year.
The 22 year old grew up in Guyra before the family relocated to Inverell. He completed a certificate of engineering through New England TAFE in Armidale last year and now works in-house at the Bindaree Beef processing plant in Inverell.
Lachlan’s interest in the trade began working beside his father Peter in his mobile welding business. After taking an evening course at Inverell TAFE during years 9 and 10, he started a school based apprenticeship in year 11.
An Australian team of 31 young people travelled to Leipzig for the competition, which saw 1000 apprentices compete in skill areas such as restaurant service, welding, cabinet making, floristry and fashion technology.
