SILVER SEASON: Guyra men's hockey captain James Abbo was pleased with his team's performances throughout the year.

Hockey New England is know for its fierce competition and Guyra’s A grade men’s team is one of the best in the region.

The boys in green were one step short of being named the best, finishing as runners-up to City in Sunday’s top-tier grand final.

Guyra knew what they were up against with the Armidale-based team the only one they fell to throughout the season.

In a speedy game which saw end-to-end action, the City side finished as 5-nil victors.

Guyra captain James Abbo said it was a tough game and his side couldn’t find any flaws in their opponents with the City team filled with representative players.

“It was always going to be a tall order. They are a very strong team across the board,” he said.

“They don't have any weaknesses and they have some very talented young players.

“All their team is particularly young.

“They played really well and deserved to win.”

While Guyra didn’t quite overcome the final hurdle, Abbo said his team were relentless and put their best foot forward throughout the game.

“Our team played our best and it just wasn't quite good enough on the day,” he said.

“We finished where we expected to.

“We had a pretty good season, we only lost two games all season - both to City.

“We played some good hockey and had fun which is what we're all about.

“That was where we thought we should have got to and based on our results for the season as it progressed that was where we should have finished up.”

In the women’s second grade game, Guyra took on Breakaways.

The girls stuck it to the minor premiers but were unable to earn the victory and the premiership trophy with Breakaways the eventual winners 4-2.

In the women’s first grade game, United and Breakaways were locked at full-time.

Dead even at 3-all, the game entered extra time and a penalty to Breakaways resulted in a goal, earning them the title.
