Junior league tag: Tingha Tigers 14 defeated Guyra Super Spuds 12.
In the junior league tag grand final, the Guyra girls were unlucky to miss out on the trophy when they faced off with Tingha.
The girls went down 14-12 in a highly entertaining game.
The junior league tag in the town has been strong in the town with this year’s team the third to make the decider.
Coach Tara Mendes said it has been a stellar year for the girls with immense growth in their game from the start.
“It has been a really good season, the girls have improved heaps,” she said.
“I have had lots of little girls this year and they have done really well too.
“They play really good as a team, they're all a good group of friends and get along really well.
“I have some really good players so I am really lucky.”
Mendes hopes to return to leading the girls next season and expects some of the younger squad members will step up again.
“All the little girls that have never played before, they have all come up and there's probably eight of them and they have all done extremely well,” she said.
“They surprise me every game they play.”
Under 10s: Guyra 36 defeated Warialda Wombats 6.
The Guyra Super Spuds under 10s team have capped off their amazing season.
The side finished unbeaten in the regular season and have now added the premiership trophy to their collection.
Coming up against Warialda in the grand final in Armidale on Saturday, Guyra were the favourites to win the title and it never looked in doubt.
They tackled their hearts out and romped home to a 36-6 victory.
Grant Ryan was at the helm this season and was rapt with the performance of his side.
“Outstanding. They deserved to win it. They have been the most consistent side but you never know on the day,” he said.
“Warialda is a very good side and our boys' defence won us the game.”
The Wombats towered above the Super Spuds boys but the Guyra side’s grit and determination to halt them in their tracks earned them the resounding win.
“Defence, just playing as a team and tackling as a team. If you don't let the other side score you have a pretty good chance to win the game,” Ryan said.
“They dug in, they have a lot of ticker and we trained on that first guy going in low and hard and it just paid off.”
The under 10s were the dominant side throughout the regular season of the Group 19 competition, having finished unbeaten with only one draw when they were missing players.
It wasn’t the only trophy the Guyra side claimed on the day. Brendan Landsborough collected the prestigious best and fairest trophy for his outstanding season.
Landsborough also collected the award for best on field in the grand final.
Under 12s: Glen Innes 28 beat Inverell 16.
Four Glen Innes teams, the highest number from any club, competed in the Group 19 junior rugby league grand finals.
Of the four, the under 12s took out the trophy, beating Inverell Hawks 28-16 on Saturday.
The under 14s, 16s and the senior league tag finished as runners up.
Coach of the premiership-winning under 12 team Steve McAlister said it was a deserved triumph.
“It was very exciting for the boys to win that,” he said.
“They have done it all year, we finished on top of the ladder as minor premiers and now major premiers, it's a great effort. It is a great bunch of kids, 19 worthy recipients of the trophies so I am very impressed.
“They love their football, they just keep growing and they listen. Up the Magpies!”
For the under 12s, Mitchell Duddy won the trophy for best on field during the decider while Caleb Hope won best and fairest for his outstanding season.
Senior league tag: Armidale Rams 22 defeated Glen Innes 14.
A runaway Taneika Landsborough sealed Armidale Rams’ senior league tag side’s grand final triumph.
In the nail-biting match of the day, Landsborough ran 80 metres to score under the posts less than two minutes from full-time to put the result out of doubt.
Just minutes prior to the final try of the Group 19 grand final, scores were locked at 14-all after a try out wide.
Tori Brazier had the tough task of slotting the conversion from out wide to break the deadlock.
She nailed it and Armidale held the edge before Landsborough’s try finished off the side’s perfect season.
The senior league tag girls are the first in the Rams junior league club’s history to ever finish a season undefeated. Lorraine Brazier took over the coaching of the side this year and was elated to see the team finish with the unbeaten record.
“Fantastic, it's unbelievable,” she said.
“We had a really good bunch of girls this year and they were out there to prove a point.
“Unfortunately it took us until the last few minutes in the game to come away with the win but they should all be very proud of themselves.
“They have beautiful friendships and they have made me feel welcome, and my daughter and I was really proud to be their coach.”
Brazier intends to return in 2018 with the hope of repeating this year’s success.
“For sure, I have to go back-to-back,” she said.
Under 14s: Inverell 46 beat Glen 12.

The Magpies found themselves behind 30-nil at half-time but came out firing in the second half.
It wasn’t enough as the Hawks finished 48-12 victors.
Under 16s: Inverell 30 defeated Glen 18.
The under 16s were gallant against Inverell.
With less than 20 minutes left on the clock, scores were tied at 16-all before a late flurry handed the Hawks the title. Bayden Grob won the trophy for the season’s best and fairest.
