The funding, secured by the Guyra and District Historical Society Machinery Group from Armidale Regional Council and the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Grants program, will help preserve the line and surrounding infrastructure, Council’s CEO, Peter Dennis, said.
“The heritage listed railway station building is used as a museum, displaying historical railway objects, antique machinery and police memorabilia,” Mr Dennis said.
“This grant will provide an opportunity to enhance the physical construction and conservation of the building and its contents to ensure that it is available to our community for many years to come.”
Ron Lockyer said the station had received a face-lift with new paint on all the signals and the railway crossing.
“Now we’re looking to put up a new shed but we just need to get that approved by Heritage,” he said.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said the museum provided an important contribution to the community.
“With the museum located within a heritage-listed railway building, this funding will help ensure the building is as well maintained as the exhibits,” he said.
The Stronger Communities Fund was established by the NSW Government to provide new councils with funding to kick-start the delivery of projects that improve community infrastructure and services.
