The Year 4 student was diagnosed with a bleed on the brain and rushed to John Hunter Hospital for emergency surgery at the end of last term.
Ms Kerr had a tumour at the back of her neck which was removed and she continues to recover in hospital.
Year 6 student Zoe Kelly decided to organise the day to raise money and awareness for Ms Kerr and her family during this tough time.
And she decided to call it Happy Day.
“She recently had a brain tumour taken out and she’s quite sick but she’s getting well,” Ms Kelly said.
“We’ve known their family for so long and we felt like we needed to do something to help them through this journey.”
Ms Kelly teamed up with another student’s mother, Maare Foster, to oragnise a day full of games, a BBQ lunch and a disco in the afternoon.
Mrs Foster said she heard what Ms Kelly had been planning and decided to give her support to drive it to fruition.
“We’ve got games that hopefully make the kids laugh and play and be happy,” she told The Argus on Wednesday morning.
Mrs Foster said she was pleased with the support shown by everyone involved in Happy Day.
She said all the food had been donated for lunch.
“All the food for lunch has been donated by the school community,” she said.
Acting Principal Deb McIntosh also donned her favourite yellow dress.
Superman and Harry Potter proved to be popular outfit choices for some students.
Cowboys were also present and even Snow White made an appearance.
“Peta’s still down there having radiation for six weeks and then next year she’ll go through six months of chemotherapy,” Mrs McIntosh said.
“Today is about raising awareness and helping Peta and her family.
“We were told to dress in things that make us happy and yellow is my favourite colour and makes me happy, which is why I’m dressed in it.” All the money raised on Happy Day will go straight to the Kerr family.
