Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall said the 348 metre pathway would be constructed thanks to $29,500 funding from the NSW Government’s Walking and Cycling program, with Armidale Regional Council matching the funding.

“This new pathway will extend Guyra’s existing pathway network, making it much easier for cyclists and pedestrians to get around town,” he said.

“The $59,000 extension will run from Sole Street, past the MPS and meet up with the recently completed cycleway at the Abercrombie Street park.

“Abercrombie Street is quite narrow, with the grassy kerbs on either side proving uncomfortable to ride or walk along. This shared pathway will ensure the road can be solely used by motorists, improving safety for everyone.”

Mr Marshall said that for the first time, the town centre, Kolara aged care facility and the MPS would be fully connected by a 2.5 metre pathway – further cementing walking and pedalling as a rewarding and viable way to travel around Guyra.

“Last year, council secured funding from the state government to build a 600-metre shared pathway along Abercrombie Street and today’s announcement will ensure the network loop is completed,” he said.

Council is expected to begin construction of the new shared pathway within the next few months.

Council’s Group Leader Service Delivery Mark Piorkowski said council was engaging with the community to design the pathway.

“Council has already consulted with a bicycle group at Guyra and is now surveying the residents on both sides of the road (including the hospital) to help decide which side of the road the track will be constructed on,” Mr Piorkowski said.

“Both sides have their pros and cons – but it’s important for the community to have a say.

“Guyra’s quiet and level streets make walking and cycling a fantastic option for residents looking to improve their fitness or save money. This shared pathway is an important step to achieving that goal.”
