Armidale Regional Council Administrator Dr Ian Tiley said the project was great news for communities across the region – and for everyone utilising local roads.
“Many of the 33 timber bridges across the region are showing signs of age and deterioration. In some cases, the timber decking is no longer able to safely carry heavy vehicles,” Dr Tiley said.
Some of the bridges have been replaced in recent years. Dr Tiley said former Guyra Shire Council was particularly good at maintaining momentum on their program of bridge restoration.
However there are currently at least 11 bridges in Armidale Regional Council local government area recognised as being in poor condition.
“Assessment of bridges is underway and the names of bridges to be prioritised will be announced in due course,” Dr Tiley said.
