The group will undertake the ongoing care and management of the items as part of their historical collection at the Guyra and District Historical Museum.
Council’s Group Leader of Organisational Services, Lindsay Woodland presented some of the signs to Dorothy Lockyer, President of the Guyra and District Historical Society, former Guyra Shire Councillor Dot Vickery and Tegan Mendes last week.
The first stage of rebranding for the Guyra Office of Armidale Regional Council has commenced with the erection of a new office sign.
Further signs and Council information will be replaced progressively, and will feature a strong Guyra identity.
Mr Woodland said he was pleased that the former signs and their historical significance will be preserved at the Museum.
“The Guyra Shire Council signs, in particular the bronze lettering from the Council building, were a recognisable part of the Guyra Main Street and it is important that they are able to be preserved and displayed,” Mr Woodland said.
“The branding is a requirement of the merger process as directed by the NSW State Government. All costs associated with this process come out of a merger implementation fund provided by the NSW State Government.”
At its ordinary general meeting of March 22, Armidale Regional Council adopted a recommendation from the community that a commemorative plaque recognising the 111 year history of Guyra Shire Council be constructed and installed in an appropriate public space in Guyra.
Council Administrator Dr Ian Tiley said that he was pleased to be able to support this request.
“A plaque that commemorates the long history of Guyra Shire Council will be a valuable addition to Guyra’s streetscape and will be a lasting physical reminder of the community’s heritage,” said Dr Tiley. “Its presence will complement the preservation and display of the Guyra Shire Council’s signage.”
The new Armidale Regional Council brand was launched at an Extraordinary Council Meeting held in the Armidale Mall on Friday, March 17.
Council staff also proudly displayed the new brand when they marched in the Council float at the 25th annual Armidale Autumn Festival Grand Parade.
