We are failing our children
As a parent and a pastor, I am greatly disturbed by the growing trend to assist children with “gender transitioning” through taxpayer-funded programs such as “Safe Schools”. For instance, the news media recently reported on a four-year-old child who identifies as transgender and is being helped to transition. In Victoria, Safe Schools held a workshop for year 4 classmates of a transitioning student. 250 children as young as three are currently clients of the gender dysphoria unit at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital. Ten years ago, that number was one.

Some may see all this as progress. I see it as further proof we are failing our children.
A recent report by prominent US psychiatrists Lawrence Mayer and Paul McHugh, who reviewed hundreds of scientific studies, confirms it’s high time we stop and listen to voices other than those of social activists.
One of their most striking findings is that there is no scientific evidence to support encouraging children to become transgender or undergo sex change procedures. This is because the great majority of children who experience gender-atypical thoughts no longer do once they become teenagers. Each child confronts us with questions: Who am I? What will I become? How can I reach my fullest potential and find a purpose for my life?
I believe the answers to those questions will best be found if we keep in mind this old Jewish saying: “When a child walks down the road, a company of angels goes before him proclaiming, ‘Make way for the image of the Holy One’”. This saying touches on the universal truth that childhood is sacred. You don’t have to believe in angels (or the “Holy One”) to sense what a miracle the birth of a baby is. The purity and innocence of a newborn is something we feel a natural urge to protect, for as long as we’re able.
Let’s end agenda-driven social experiments involving our children, and defend the sanctity of childhood. With an attitude of reverence for the souls of our children, we will then find the key that unlocks their unique personalities and talents.
