Guyra Central School students have been busy little bees for the past three weeks - Busy being little “spelling” bees that is. In preparation for the Premier’s Spelling Bee, students have been practising their list words and learning to be confident in their spelling abilities.

On Thursday August, 4 we put their spelling to the test in our Primary Spelling Bee. Almost all students from Early Stage 1 to Stage 3 participated in the event, showing their great dedication to learning and to representing Guyra Central School.
I was very impressed with the confidence displayed and good sportsmanship that all the participants demonstrated during the spelling bee.
At all times throughout the competition students (competing and audience members) showed our core values of; Pride, Respect and Responsibility. Congratulations to Kelsey McLeod, Elizabeth Evers, Charlie Mitchell and Kye Raper for taking the first place titles for their stage groups. We wish them the best of luck in the regional round and are very proud of the achievements thus far. I would also like to take a moment to show my personal gratitude for being allowed to organise the Spelling Bee and acknowledge the support I was given by Mrs Burgess, the teaching staff, parents and especially the students.

Multi-Sport Day for students with Disability
On Friday 5th August, I went to Tamworth to attend a Multi-Sports day for students with disabilities. I was teamed up with students from Oxley High School and formed a team of 14.
The first sport that I participated in was AFL, I really enjoyed having a go at this sport. We then went inside to play Netball. I had great fun. We then had a break for recess and after the break, we went back inside to play cricket. I had a bat, bowled and threw the ball at the wicket. Then we went to Soccer and I managed to kick the ball into the net. The last sport we participated in was NRL. Finally I got a sample bag full of goodies, had lunch then travelled back to Guyra. I had a wonderful day and enjoyed socialising and participating with the students from schools in our area.

Primary Zone Athletics Carnival
Tuesday 2nd August, 30 students from Guyra Central School attended the Primary Zone Athletics Carnival in Armidale. All of the students displayed outstanding sportsmanship and tried their best in all of their events. We look forward to hearing official results for who has made the North West Athletics team. I would like to thank Mr Sam James and Miss Eunice Blair for attending the carnival with the students and also a huge thank you to the parents who were able to take their children down to the event.

Shaun Tan Exhibition
On 21st July the Art and Senior English classes went to the Shaun Tan Exhibition where we learnt about the processes involved in creating the book and film of The Lost Thing.
We also had a tour guide who went into more detail and showed us items in the book we didn’t pick up on our own.
After we had a detailed look around the Shaun Tan exhibit we got a full tour of the rest of the Art Gallery which included the landscape exhibition.
After our tour was over we looked through the gift shop and had a snack at the café. This excursion helped us learn about unique ways of drawing and making sculptures.
It was a lot of fun and we would like to thank Miss Townsend and Mrs Dolby for taking us down there and organising the excursion. We would like to thank the New England Regional Art Museum for hosting us.
