Not many reports have filtered through to me this week, not sure if it is just because of the ginormous break we have had from soccer through untoward weather and the holiday time we have had to endure, I do love it when the kids go back to school and the wife back to work.

It seems that most of our coaches have forgotten to send me anything this week, or is it perhaps that their fingers are too cold and blue to be able to type. It was again a cold and blustery day that greeted us last Saturday morning; the sauce on top of my pie was blown off before I could get it to my mouth. I even witnessed one of the Armidale “Pie Eaters” struggling to circumnavigate her crusty and delicious baked treat from the Guyra Bakery (a long standing supporter of Guyra soccer). She Melinda a North Armidale supporter finished with most of it down her front, I did offer to help clean her up but she politely declined, as only Mel really can, my ears are still ringing.
Kicking off our morning of soccer last week was the under 6 Vipers who despite the long layoff played some attractive soccer. An excellent game in goals by young Hannah Evers stopping many chances on goal, shutting down her oppositions attacking flair. Saint Peter on duty at the Pearly gates lets more in than Hannah does. Logan Lockyer is really coming of age in relation to his soccer, all five years of it, and is improving every week.
Not deterred by their lack of recent competition the under 6 Jets played the best soccer of the season against a committed DK side. Abbey Grills capped off a fantastic game with her first goal of the season. Edward Grills, Noah Brennan and Tom Graham all scored multiple goals for their team. Tom told me that they had flogged their opposition, but I had to block my ears with this all being non-competitive of course. Camilla Grills and Ruby Menkens both competed extremely well and were both unlucky not to add to the score card. A very nice team effort with the kids from the Jets once again showing their skill but still playing with a level of sportsmanship that far exceeds their tender years.
Another great performance from the under 9 Mustangs galloping fresh and free after their long spell. Best on field for Guyra was Brock Hoffman with goals going to Jake Tibbs, Jason Mowbray and Lincoln Brown.
Well now after a four week lay about the under 10 Lil Caspers soon came to the realization that their fitness levels were not as good as they had thought. Coach Lockyer is considering a three day a week training regime, Monday, Wednesday and Friday for an hour and a half each session. I feel as though it is not only the kids that have missed their soccer but also Mr Lockyer.
The Lil Caspers did not take long to get back into the groove however with their passing, excellent communication and teamwork contributing to each goal scored. The wind was difficult to manage at times but the Lil Caspers were able to overcome this with Jaymie Donnelly and Alice Bourne the pick of the players. Jaymie hassled well in the halves and got back to help defend on numerous occasions. Alice scored her first goal not just for the season but apparently a first for her career. Scoring for Guyra also were; Aidan Purvis 3, Jack Lockyer 2 and Cooper Wilson 1. I watched some of this game and the Lil Caspers certainly did not have things all their own way particularly in the beginning of the match. A nice performance from this young side.
Slow to begin the under 16 Pumas looked to be heading towards an easy defeat against North’s United. Down on the scoreboard and seemingly in confidence the first half performance from the Pumas was, one could say, very ordinary. Improving in the second phase of play the under 16 Guyra side was able to eke out a 2 all draw. Goal scorers for Guyra were Taylor Brennan, his first of the season, and after a nice corner from Guyra the goalie for North’s who could not handle the cross.
Taylor Brennan was the pick of the Guyra players playing arguably the best soccer of his season. BJ Cameron was strong in defence and the halves covering a large area of the field. BJ pulled off a great save for the Guyra side with his scrambling in defence. Another to feature prominently in play last week was Ashley Richardson who shone through with some fantastic defensive plays.
At times a frustrating side to watch the Pumas but they will I am sure be there in the mix at the pointy end of the season.
