Well I for one am certainly excited to finally see so much water lying around and in fact flowing somewhere; hopefully the local water smell/taste will now improve. I don’t blame you Boyd Arthur like a lot of others are; I think it was just a result of no fresh water flowing into the catchment.

Much needed rain over the past couple of weeks and of course I know not everybody is a fan, but there is snow predicted leading into this weekend, I certainly hope we receive a generous helping. Not a fan of the wind though that we have been buffeted by during this week, I didn’t see a dog blown off his chain but I am pretty sure one flew past me still attached to his kennel fashioned from an old corrugated iron tank; Addy and Naomi are you missing a dog?
Not a great deal of junior soccer available for the fans over the past several weeks with one round washed out and a break for the long weekend. We did resume however with a bang; another of those cold wet and windy Guyra mornings saw our juniors provide us with some fantastic performances.
Well I was witness to a very awkward man to man hug early last Saturday morning. In this enlightened age in a forward thinking community such as Guyra, the mere act of a man to man hug was most certainly not the issue. I feel that the awkwardness was a result of the significant height difference involved. Coach Dasha, in the midst of said embrace, looked upwards; a look reciprocated in kind of course in the reverse direction, to coach Scotty with a sense of immense joy and satisfaction at the performance that they were both witnessing.
The unbridled joy was due to the best performance that they had witnessed from the under 16 Pumas this season, particularly in the first half. The team work was second to none, they were working their triangles, passing the way they faced, communicating and playing as one unit. It is always so satisfying as a coach to see what they are teaching at training is being taken on board by their young charges and coming to the fore during the game each week.
Scoring for Guyra in their 3–0 win were: Cody Martin, Matt Sisson and BJ Cameron all in the first half. Playing the game of her career was Anna Jackson who was dynamic for the Pumas. Dasha’s points this week went to everyone in such an accomplished team effort. Birthday wishes from the Pumas go out for last Saturday to Nic Graham and Kaleb Hope.
Almost scoring his first goal for the Pumas was Jack Radford who again had a very good game. Carly Harman, a little surprised to be pushed up front near the end of the first half, was also unlucky not to put one into the back of the net. A great performance from the Pumas with the coaching staff as indicated very excited by their startling form.
A tough game for the under 12 Gladiators played out against a South Armidale side on the open wind and rain driven tundra that is the elevated steppes of the Guyra Recreation and Sporting Field. A big 6–3 loss for the Gladiators who were just never really in this match.
Scoring for Guyra was Jake Wilson 2 and Robert Sisson 1. Ty Davis tried hard in goals but was up against a very determined attack in Souths. Playing well in the halves were Jessica Bourne and Robert Sisson with Cooper Johnston having a fantastic game in the backs.
A difficult match for the Gladiators who have certainly performed better; perhaps the two week layoff was not to their liking.
In a very free flowing game the under 10 Lil Caspers certainly excelled in finding the net. A pleasing aspect of the game, with many players having a turn in positions that they rarely occupy, was the continuity in defence.
With the whole team contributing in this performance to promote the ball forward, this side went on a goal scoring spree. Scoring goals for the Lil Caspers were: Ryan Heagney 3 who was outstanding on the day, Aidan Purvis 3, Jack Lockyer 3, Cooper Wilson 2, Will Friend 1 and rounding out Guyra’s scoring Cooper Brennan with 1.
A very good accomplishment from this young Guyra side with their efforts certainly making things hard for their coach Mr Craig Lockyer, he had to add the goals up on both hands and I am reasonably sure he was about to take off his shoes as the score climbed ever higher.
Another sound performance from the under 9 Mustangs although perhaps a little rusty after the forced layoff. David Rainger and Brock Hoffman both played well in the field with Brock scoring his first of the season with a quality goal. Also to score for the Mustangs were Harry Purvis 2 and Rhett Heagney 1.
A great little team this one that will be better with a couple of games to get them back into the swing of things.
Showing more improvements despite the break from soccer are the under 8 Rockets with a strong showing against the Armidale West side Tigers. Wyatt McGinty worked very hard in defence ably supported by Elizabeth Evers. Lachlan Hunter had a very busy game getting involved with much of the play both in attack and defence.
Caitlin Montague scored a very determined goal for her side and played some very competitive soccer throughout the game. A side that continues to impress as the year progresses.
A nice goal from George Bradford for the under 8 Hornets. George seems to be becoming something of a prolific scorer for his team in the early half of the season. Isaac Hayes and Daniel Grills were the pick of the players for the Hornets this week.
Certainly hope that Coach Brodie Harman is teaching his players to shoot the ball under the crossbar and not over it, something that Brodie does not seem to have mastered himself yet after watching the seniors play last Saturday afternoon.
No scorers for the under 7 Cobras but still a great effort by this young side. Making their way over to the opposition to help out for a half each were Riley White and Levi Vanderwolf; thanks to those players. I believe they were rewarded post game for their efforts.
Here is hoping that Blake Raper is not following his father’s performances with an interesting game up front had by Hayden Raper during his thirsty third grade appearance. I have been told the old radar was somewhat off with only one shot from a baker’s dozen finding its mark. An open goal for Hayden is I believe still open, my source may be trying to deflect somewhat however with his own percentages well down on what should be, you found that dog yet mate?
I am led to believe that Davey Wilson was told by everyone including the referee that he was not allowed off until he scored a goal; he may still be out there. Goals to Hayden, Spoon and Jake McKay in a 3–0 win.
The under 7 Guyra Gems playing against St Johns certainly have not forgotten how to play their soccer with a great performance last weekend in again dubious conditions. Scoring for the Gems were: Archie Jackson 1 and Jemima Atkins 1, player of the match was Aidan Brown with an incredible performance on the day. Aidan was running over the entire pitch and continued to help out his team mates throughout the game.
A brilliant game from Isabella Purvis for her under 6 Vipers whilst in goals with a massive improvement in ball skills from Logan Lockyer. Even with the rain pelting down you would not have known it with the kids loving their time out on the field. They were bundled up pretty quickly by their parents at the end of the game and whisked away to warmer, dryer areas.
Well what a week for the under 6 Gremlins, Saturday’s game certainly filled coaches Amanda and Nicole with great pride. The entire team worked together well with everybody getting plenty of time with the ball after some very good team work and passing between players.
The players worked in well together to provide the ball for those players that had not scored a goal so far this season. The end result was season opening goals to Tyler Cameron and Tommy Ward. With this group of kids celebrating each other’s success this certainly is one special little team.
